So I think every once in awhile I'll have an "Apologetics site of the week" post. I've posted this site before, but that was-Dear God-nearly two years ago. And I might as well start with the best.
Glen Miller's Christian Think Tank. This may have been the first site like this I ever encountered, maybe eight years ago? This man is one of my heroes, there was a time he was what I wanted to be.
You get to see how the Bible was put together( 1 and 2 ) among other things.
Was Genesis just a rip off of ancient pagan literature? This one used to trouble me greatly. Glen deals with it.
What about all that killing in the Old Testament? Covered.
Weren't Jews expecting a non-supernatural political Messiah, not Jesus? I used to hear this one a lot in chat rooms(naturally, as there are no Jews in Oklahoma apparently).
What about the Bible's nasty attitude toward women? "Women in the Heart of God" is a good series. Women church leaders in the New Testament..my my, how can we allow THAT?
From OT Prophecy, to Messianic Prophecy, trustworthiness of the Bible, to whether or not God is cruel and doesn't care about natural evil, or whether the Bible was created by rules to control people, there is a wealth of material that will take quite some time to read. I've never even read it all. Glen covers it.
Common objections here, and a list by subject.
Take a look under the about the author section and you'll find a fellow with degrees in theology and some work towards philosophy, who unfortunately has to use his degrees in computer science to make a living. He's attempted his own business ventures before to free up time for more apologetics work, but it's never gone as well as he'd hoped. Which is unfortunate, because it's unfair that he isn't making tons of money off of his writing.
Anything from historical problems and Biblical scholarship to theological or philosophical problems, and he's covered it probably. You'll see a fellow with surprisingly uh....unusual taste compared to what you'd expect in books and movies. Some really bad movies, tons of vampire/werewolf stuff, Buckaroo Banzai, some anime, etc(He's almost like me, but twice as old and twice as smart). He also shares his own conversion experience, way back in his college years. You can look at his list of recently purchased books to see the man doesn't ever stop reading, on any subject.
He is the consummate Christian apologist, not just because of his versatility in various intellectual approaches(not merely a theologian, but a philosopher, not merely a philosopher, but a man familiar with how Ugaritic relates to Hebrew), but because of his tone. We are told to "speak the truth" in love, which is sometimes difficult and frustrating. Frankly, I'm sometimes not sure I'm capable(depending on the opponent). Glen is always warm and friendly with his antagonists, and even jokes a bit with them. Never a hint of hate or anger or a "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU JUST SAID THAT!" etc.
Though I've never emailed him, I feel I somewhat know him a little because of his openness with his readers over the years. I've watched him debate skeptics and answer letters over the years, always warm and informative(sometimes to the point of overkill, often actually) regardless of the question. I've read his prayer requests over the years and chastised myself for not praying more for this man to win the lottery or something(I wish I was rich just so I could support this guy a la the old client/patron system where artists or teachers were supported by the wealthy). And I've watched him struggle for a time, after the heart-breaking death of his young daughter Britt from meningitis.
And when I thought NO ONE ELSE on Earth had the answers to the questions that were burning in my heart, when queries from skeptics on how much of the Bible was stolen from this or that pagan religion or cult deeply troubled me, when I didn't even know there was a wealth of material out there supporting the traditional view of the Bible, and so on, Glen Miller was there to answer my questions.
There are other sites out there dealing with similar issues. But most don't deal with so many different kinds as he does. Or so in depth.
And this one is by far, the best. I should probably buy the CD-Rom sometime.
Bookmark it, email it to yourself, or whatever. You'll be glad you did.
